Assistant/Deputy Superintendent Job Description
The Assistant/Deputy Superintendent under the direction of the Superintendent provides professional and administrative work in support of the Superintendent in the daily operation of the facility; manages the daily operations of the records, Classification, Medical, Food Service, Warehouse, Maintenance, Sanitation, training, Systems, Programs, LIDS, and Work Release & Home Electronic Monitoring (HEM) departments; assigns and coordinates work methods of personnel, setting priorities, and directing work of employees; evaluates and verifies employee performance through the review of completed work assignments and work techniques; identifies staff development and training needs and ensures training is obtained; ensures proper labor relations and conditions of employment are maintained; maintains records, prepares reports, and composes correspondence relative to work; implements policy and develops procedures within areas of responsibility; develops and implements procedures for educational and treatment programs based on departmental policy; reviews job applications, prepares and conducts hiring interviews,and selects the most qualified candidate; performs related work as assigned by the Superintendent.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of modern penology and criminology; thorough knowledge of operations of the criminal justice system; through knowledge of laws applicable to correctional operations, including but not limited to Virginia Board of Corrections standards; general knowledge of human resource and employee issues, rights, and laws; ability to plan, organize and supervise a large staff and correctional facility; ability to estabilish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public; ability to speak and write effectively to convey ideas and information; ability to read, analyze, interpret and evaluate a variety of, legal documents, and scientific and technical journals.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in corrections, criminal justice, police science, public administration or a closely related field or education and training and experience equivalent to 4 year college education in criminal justice, corrections, security or another relevant field is required. At least ten years of progressive experience in criminal justice is required, including five years of experience as a senior-level manager is preferred.
Physical Requirements
Work involves some degree of risk to personal safety due to inherently stressful environment and close contact with inmates in a secure setting. This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions: vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word: hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities: the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and atmospheric conditions.
Special Requirements
A driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must maintain certification in all applicable Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services training for jails or obtain certification within one year of hire. Must be able to respond to jail within one hour from place of primary residence.
